Call for Workshop or Symposium

The Organising Committee invites proposals for running of workshops or symposia.

Each workshop or symposium should have at least 10 paper presentations.

The organiser/s will be responsible for promoting the workshop or symposium, reviewing and recommending abstracts and full papers for the book of proceedings.

Each participant interested in submitting an abstract to a workshop or symposium must send the formatted abstract to the workshop or symposium organiser/s. If the abstract is suitable for the workshop or symposium, organiser/s should inform the participant to submit the abstract to the online submission system of the conference. If the abstract is not suitable for the workshop or symposium, organiser/s should inform the participant to submit the abstract to the online submission system to be considered for oral/poster sessions of the conference. All deadlines must be respected.

Each proposal should include the following details:

  1. Title of workshop or symposium.
  2. Details of the organiser/s (name, current position and e-mail address).
  3. Brief description in about 100 words of the workshop or symposium.
  4. Participants targeting.

Proposal for running workshops or symposia should be submitted online.
Submit your application online
The deadline for proposal submission is 13th Dec 2019.

The Organising Committee reserves the right to decide about the running of workshop/symposium.

Symposium and Workshop I

Title

Computational Chemistry and its Applications

Brief

Computational chemistry uses computers to solve chemical problems. It applies theoretical methods implemented in software for computations. At the outset of the 21st century, computational chemistry is leading to a wide range of possibilities usually interdisciplinary. This symposium aims to gather researchers applying computational methods in chemistry and allied subjects. The topics may be related but not limited to structural, spectroscopic, kinetic and thermodynamic aspects.

There will also be a workshop (half-day including theory and practicals) on the uses and applications of computational chemistry methods in research.

Organisers

Prof Ponnadurai Ramasami and Dr Lydia Rhyman, Computational Chemistry Group, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Mauritius

Workshop II

Title

An Introduction to R

Brief

The R statistical software is a free software environment which is famous among the Statisticians for its reliability and its ease of access. R applications are wide including Finance, Chemistry and others. For example, in Chemistry, R may be used in the application of non-linear regression for optimising the separation of carboxylic acids, editing and visualizing molecular information through the “rcdk” package and others. R offers a lot of flexibility in terms of the different packages it offers.
In this workshop, you will be introduced to the R open source software environment and be given the opportunity to perform exploratory data analyses and other analyses pertaining to a dataset. By the end of the workshop, you would be able to differentiate between different objects in R, manipulate vectors, write simple functions in R, perform basic manipulation of matrices in R, install packages in R, load a dataset in R, apply graphical procedures on the dataset and apply common statistical analyses on the dataset in R.

Symposium II
Title Natural Products: Potential and Applications
Brief Naturally occuring compounds remain the most viable source of potential therapeutic moieties. This symposium aims at gathering natural product chemists, synthetic chemists, biochemists around the potential of nature as a viable source of novel therapeutics aimed at providing possible solutions to some of the major health challenges facing mankind today. Any presentations around the chemistry and biology of naturally occuring compounds are welcome.

Title Cutting Edge Processing Technologies to Support Regional Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Brief The SADC region has a well-established manufacturing industry, however this has not translated to pharmaceutical manufacturing strength. Nearly all of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and biopharmaceuticals, with a few exceptions, are imported and the region has suffered from critical drug shortages. There is an industry pull towards to newer leap-frogging technologies, including continuous manufacturing, green process design and new biological expression systems, that could provide an internationally competitive production advantage to the region. The proposed workshop will discuss innovation opportunities in API process development for the production of cost efficient drugs to supply regional health care systems.
Organiser Dr Jenny-Lee Panayides, CSIR, Future Production: Chemicals, South Africa

Reference Symposium III
Title Introduction to Materials Informatics
Brief The third and fourth industrial revolution (3IR and 4IR) has done wonders in business giving rise to business analytics and informatics. However, in materials modelling, while 3IR is well developed and acknowledged thanks to increased computational power and algorithm refinements that have made quantum chemistry calculations for (larger) systems tractable with improved accuracy, 4IR, which is critical for Chemistry 4.0, has steadily been gaining traction and hence the emergence of materials informatics. In this symposium, using a simple materials' database with some PYTHON tools, a hands on session on introduction to machine learning for materials modelling with be conducted by using materials properties such as composition, crystal structure, band structure among other properties as viable descriptors for materials' prediction.

Reference Symposium IV
Title Dyes: Synthesis and Applications
Brief The symposium will focus on synthesis and application dyes on textiles as well innovative applications in organic electronics, bioelectronics, molecular imaging. The organic electronics related applications include dyes sensitized solar cells, organic photovoltaics, light emitting diodes, and related areas. Molecular imaging applications include theranostoc and diagnostic applications.
