Assoc Prof Dr Joyce GOVINDEN SOULANGE Dean of Faculty

Welcome to the Faculty of Agriculture, which is celebrating its 111th birthday this year. Whether you are just starting out or continuing your journey with us, we are thrilled to have you as part of our vibrant academic community.

Our Faculty is proud to align our teaching, research and outreach activities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as we aim to tackle some of the country’s and world’s biggest challenges including ending hunger, improving health and wellbeing, and taking action on climate change. We are committed to preparing a new generation of professionals equipped with SDG competencies to lead the way towards a more sustainable and equitable future both locally and globally.

Academic excellence is at the heart of what we do. With the support of respected external examiners from top universities around the globe from the UK to South Africa and beyond, we maintain strong, high quality programs. We also make sure that our students are job ready by integrating industry placements into the curriculum, equipped with hands on experience, ethical grounding, and valuable professional networks.

We are incredibly proud of our alumni, many of whom now lead in government, business, and international organizations. Their success stories often begin right here, and we are glad that many stay connected with us long after graduation. As a student, we encourage you to get involved, build connections, and take full advantage of everything our academic and social community has to offer.

As you navigate this chapter, take charge of your learning. Make time to understand the University guidelines and always uphold academic integrity. While AI and other technologies offer amazing opportunities to support your learning, remember: they are just tools and not substitutes for your own hard work, creativity, and growth.

University life is more than lectures and exams; it offers a chance to discover who you are, build friendships, explore interests, and grow in every way. Embrace it with balance and curiosity.

We are excited to see what you will accomplish and how you will contribute to the Faculty, the University, and the world beyond.

Here is to an inspiring and successful academic year ahead.
