and most importantly, fellow newcomers,
Good morning, Everyone!
First things first: Take a deep breath. Look around you. You’ve made it to the University of Mauritius. Congratulations to all of you who have secured a seat here!
Welcome to the University of Mauritius.
This isn’t just a new chapter, this is the beginning of your story. This is the start of something big, something that’s going to push you to your limits, challenge you in ways you’ve never imagined, and set the stage for your success.
I, Rungiah Tirouvalen, deeply honored to stand before you as your President of the Students' Union , and I’m here to tell you that “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” That’s right. You’re not here by accident. You’re here because you have the potential to shape your own future, to build the life you envision, and to leave your mark on this world.
But here’s the thing: university isn’t just about getting a degree. It is more than lecture halls and exams. It’s about growth, learning, and “outworking everyone.” Whether you’re hitting the books in the library or out with friends, make every moment count. Don’t just go through the motions and take charge. You always have a choice and you can choose to do the bare minimum, or you can choose to do something extraordinary. The decision is yours.
Here at UoM, we’ve got everything you need to succeed in academic excellence, a vibrant campus, and a community that will support you. But the real secret? “The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary.” So, put in the effort. Show up, even when it’s tough. Push yourself harder than you thought possible. Because success doesn’t just happen, it’s earned.
Let me also take a moment to share a few practical tips based on my own experience as a student here:
- Check your umail regularly – This is your official communication channel with the university. Don’t miss out on key academic updates, event notices, and important announcements.
- Familiarise yourself with the UoM rules and regulations – It will save you from a lot of trouble and confusion later. Know your rights, but also your responsibilities.
- Respect each other – We come from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs. Mutual respect is the foundation of a peaceful and inclusive campus.
- Respect the campus environment – Let me be clear: No drugs, smoking, or drinking is allowed on campus. This is a place for learning, not for breaking boundaries.
- Know how to raise concerns properly:
If you ever face an issue, here’s the step-by-step process to follow:
→ First, speak to your tutor.
→ If the issue is unresolved, go to your Programme Coordinator (PC).
→ Next step, approach your Head of Department (HOD) or Dean.
→ And only then, if nothing works, come to the Students’ Union as a last resort.
Why? Because the SU handles hundreds of issues and we want to give attention to each, but we need your help to follow the right channels.
Now, back to the bigger picture...
Speaking of challenges, I’ll be honest with you; it won’t always be easy, you’re going to face some tough moments, failures and frustrations where you question everything. You’re going to hit a wall. But don’t forget: “When you’re backed up against the wall, break the goddamn thing down.” This university experience will push you, but it will also reveal your strength. And trust me, you’re stronger than you think.
So, whether you’re chasing academic success, exploring new passions, or making lifelong friendships, remember this: “Winning means you’re willing to do whatever it takes.” Take risks. Challenge the status quo. Be bold. You weren’t born to blend in but you were born to stand out. Don’t be afraid to fail because failure is simply the price of greatness.
So as you step into this new beginning, remember this:
You were not made to play it safe.
You were not made to stay silent.
BUT you were made to build, to lead and to transform.
This is your time.
This is your moment.
The University will give you the stage but only you can perform.
Welcome to University of Mauritius once again!
You’ve got everything you need to succeed.
The future is yours and now, go out there and make it happen.
The adventure starts now.
Thank you!
