Dean of Faculty

Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Mauritius.

It is with great pleasure that I extend this welcome to you — whether you are a prospective student exploring your options or a partner who shares our passion for engineering excellence.

Our Faculty has a proud and meaningful history. Founded in 1968 — the very year Mauritius gained its independence — as the School of Industrial Technology, we began with a clear purpose: to equip Mauritians with the technical skills needed to build a young nation. From those early certificate and diploma programmes, we introduced our first undergraduate degrees in 1976, and have since grown into the country's foremost provider of engineering education. It is worth noting that our first Head of School was Professor Sir Edouard Lim Fat, a founding figure whose legacy is honoured in the Engineering Tower that bears his name.

Almost sixty years on, we are the largest engineering faculty in Mauritius, comprising five academic departments:

• Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering
• Department of Civil Engineering
• Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
• Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering
• Department of Applied Sustainability and Enterprise Development

Our four-year BEng (Hons) programmes are aligned to the Washington Accord competency standards and accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa/IEM-EAB, ensuring that a degree from our Faculty carries international recognition. We also offer a range of BSc and MSc programmes in specialised areas, as well as MPhil and PhD programmes by research — pathways that cater to every stage of an engineering career.

We are also proud to be a forward-looking Faculty. We are integrating artificial intelligence into our teaching and modernising our assessments. Traditional assessments are highly vulnerable to AI misuse and a reform in assessment strategy is necessary to ensure that that our graduates are not only technically competent, but are equipped to use AI as an effective engineering tool — while upholding the independent judgment, ethical responsibility, and professional excellence that define a great engineer.

We look forward to being part of your journey.
